Saturday’s game between Clemson and Georgia Southern is the latest game to be affected by the impact of Hurricane Florence as the storm prepares to hit the U.S. coast this weekend. The Eagles secured their second win of the season, defeating UMass 34-13 over the weekend. Georgia Southern is one of only two teams in the Sun Belt to be undefeated heading into Week 3 of the college football season. Clemson survived a scare against the Aggies, winning by two points Saturday night.

The Tigers shouldn’t have much of a problem with this easy-scheduled game at home against Georgia Southern.  Georgia Southern has gotten off to a very nice start, especially with the way quarterback Shai Werts has played. The Eagles want to run the ball, while Clemson has a terrific front seven, so it’s going to be tough sledding for the Georgia Southern offensive attack. The Eagles should try to throw on Clemson after Texas A&M’s performance through the air Saturday night.

The Eagles defense looked good against UMass, allowing 13 points. Benz Josue had an interception in the win. Georgia Southern didn’t get a sack, which was interesting, in Saturday’s win. The Eagles have the impossible task of slowing down Clemson’s offensive attack. Georgia Southern only had three quarterback hurries and one tackle for loss. It might be a long day for a Georgia Southern defense.

Clemson’s defense was gashed by the Aggies quarterback play Saturday night. Kellen Mond threw for over 400 yards and three scores as the Tigers secondary wasn’t up for the challenge. The Tigers were able to get four sacks in the narrow win, and they should be able to dominate the line of scrimmage against the Eagles. Georgia Southern’s Shai Werts has a real dual threat ability. The Eagles want to run the ball, which bodes well for the Tigers, because their front seven is one of the best in college football.

Clemson’s Kelly Bryant rushed for 54 yards and a scored to go along with a passing touchdown over Texas A&M. The Tigers freshman Trevor Lawrence threw a touchdown to Tee Higgins as Higgins made such a sensational play for a 64-yard score. The two-quarterback approach for the Tigers has worked well so far. Bryant gives them this tremendous value with his legs, while Lawrence has big-play ability with his passing. Clemson’s offense shouldn’t have much of a problem scoring against Georgia Southern. It might be a big running game for Clemson.

Ohio vs Virginia

Ohio vs Virginia : Ohio will go up against a fast Virginia offense which may spell problems for the Bobcats as they were unable to slow down the Howard Bison in their opening home win. Anytime a team gives up more than 600 total yards of offense, it is a needed time to rebound as a college football team should average around allowing 300 yards per game.

The Ohio Bobcats are looking to keep their winning streak going as they head into Virginia to take on the Cavaliers. The Bobcats are hoping they can start a run-first offense against the Cavaliers Saturday, as the Cavaliers are looking to start a new streak of their own. Coming into this game, the Cavaliers have won just one of the past five games including last season.

Ohio University is one of the few teams to start the season with an already bye week under their belt, but they come out of it fresh and ready to go. Ohio will go up against a fast Virginia offense which may spell problems for the Bobcats as they were unable to slow down the Howard Bison in their opening home win. Anytime a team gives up more than 600 total yards of offense, it is a needed time to rebound as a college football team should average around allowing 300 yards per game.

However, there are some positives in this matchup for the Bobcats. Even though they did allow of those yards, they did manage to pull closer to the game with the four turnovers they created. As for the offense, they too did not force any turnovers, just needed some more time to get comfortable in the game. With a week off, expect the Bobcats to be ready.

The Virginia Cavaliers were unable to keep their winning streak alive against the Indiana Hoosiers as they fell by the final score of 20-16. As stated above, it took some time for the Bobcats offense to get clicking but the Indiana Hoosiers needed only 1 minute to have a decent lead in the game. The Cavaliers allowed two touchdowns to begin the first quarter in a matter of 40 seconds.

A problem for the Cavaliers in this matchup is the momentum changing because of the quick scores. Ohio can force turnovers and can turn this game around even if they are behind early. Even though they allowed those fast points, they can buckle down as they come into this game with only allowing 16.5 points per game. The Cavaliers must start the game off with some momentum and keep it going.

On the flip side, the offense has been average so far this season especially the passing game. So far this season, Virginia is ranked 113th in the nation with throwing for 148 passing yards per game. Quarterback Bryce Perkins has been more of a run first QB as he has yet to complete a pass over 35 yards this season. Perkins has completed two weeks so far with throwing for 291 passing yards along with four touchdowns.

It’s a non-conference matchup when the SEC rolls into the Golden Dome in week 3 college football action. The Vanderbilt Commodores are on the road as they travel to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Saturday afternoon. Vanderbilt remained unbeaten as they rolled to a 41-10 win over Nevada at home last Saturday. Notre Dame had their struggles but put up Ball State 24-16 at home in their contest last Saturday.

Vanderbilt improved to 2-0 as they took care of business at home against Nevada last week. The Commodores shook off a slow first quarter to take a 17-3 lead in the second quarter. After seeing the lead trimmed to 17-10 at the half, Vanderbilt outscored Nevada 24-0 in the second half to get the win. Vanderbilt forced four turnovers while committing two and controlled the margin in the contest.

Notre Dame looked listless and unmotivated at times a week after beating then-#14 Michigan at home to open the season. The Fighting Irish did enough to get by with a win but it was hardly the kind of performance one would expect against a mid-major like Ball State. Notre Dame led 24-6 after three quarters but gave up two fourth quarter scores to tighten the game up.Notre Dame’s defense forced a pair of turnovers that they converted into touchdowns.

Vanderbilt has looked good in their first two games as they’ve held the opposition to 75 yards per game and 2.5 yards per carry on the ground this season. Of course, it’s important to note that Vanderbilt started 3-0 last season before losing seven of their final nine games. Brian Kelly has to consider the fact that Wimbush isn’t exactly the best passing option the team has. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Ian Book get some playing time if Wimbush continues to struggle.

Notre Dame News gathers and disseminates information that enhances understanding of the University’s academic and research mission. Here we go y’all! Two weeks in and we are still sitting in the middle of nowhere. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are 2-0 and as far as most people are concerned, it feels like 1-1 after that poor performance against Ball State.

The UC-Davis Aggies will travel to Stanford Stadium to take on the 9th ranked Stanford Cardinal this upcoming Saturday afternoon in College Football action. The Stanford Cardinal continued their strong start to the season as after taking care of business of San Diego State in their season opener, they improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating the 17th ranked USC Trojans, 17-3, this past Saturday night.

UC Davis has had a nice start to their season, but reality is going to come crashing on the Aggies pretty quickly when they face off agianst Stanford on the road this upcoming Saturday. UC Davis did get a feel-good victory over the FBS San Jose State Spartans, however, let’s not forget that the Spartans aren’t better than probably have the FCS schools out there and as the Aggies were projected to be nothing more than an average team in the Big Sky this season, I don’t think we can expect much against a team like Stanford.

Stanford has some questions on the defensive end coming into the season however, has been outstanding against two quality opponents and their offense actually looks more dangerous this year as if teams decide to load the box against Bryce Love, QB K.J. Costello is more than capable of beating opponents through the air. This is going to be a monster number so my initial thoughts is to go with Stanford if a 1H number is lined as although I think they’ll win big, I might be hesitant to go with the Cardinal on the game line as I can see a backdoor cover by the Aggies with the Cardinals resting the majority of their starters in the 2nd half with a trip to Oregon the following weekend.

The lack of information about the specific issue and severity of the injury makes it impossible to determine the long-term impact for No. 9 Stanford, which could be holding out its star against an FCS team to keep him fresh for the critical Pac-12 North battle next week at Oregon.

After a tough OT loss to Wake Forest of the ACC in their season opener Tulane got to .500 with an easy win in their last game. They crushed Nichols State 42-17 and while they were not playing a college football powerhouse they still put up 42 points. The Green Wave head into this non-conference road matchup with UAB as a 3.5-point favorite. The last time the Green Wave faced the Blazers it was at UAB in 2012 where the Wave won 55-45 in a barnburner.

After crushing a cream puff in their season opener with a 52-0 win over Savannah State UAB’s defense did not do so well in their last game giving up 47 points in a loss. The Blazers are a solid 7-0-1 ATS in their last eight home games, but they have a tough task in this game against Tulane, who put up 42 points in their last game.

Tulane was at home in their last game and they beat Nichols State 42-17 where they had a great ground attack. They had 458 total yards and 268 of them came on the ground. Corey Dauphine rushed for 152 yards on only six carries with a 69-yard gallop and Darius Bradwell rushed for 93 yards on 13 carries averaging a legit 7.2 yards per carry.

Jonathan Banks was 12 of 16 for 190 yards with a TD and no picks and Darnell Mooney had 11 receiving yards and hauled in the TD pass. Dauphine leads the team in rushing and while he had a big game in his last one he only rushed for 29 yards in the opening loss to Wake Forest.

The Tulane D did give up 415 yards in the easy win over Nichols State and also gave up over 500 total yards in the loss to Wake Forest. They have not looked good against the run and they have to shore up their run D facing UAB.

In their last game UAB was on the road where they lost to Coastal Carolina 47-24 where it would be an understatement saying they did not have the best 2nd half. At the half the Blazers were up 24-20, but were shut out in the 2nd half while giving up 27 points. They only had 28 fewer yards than Coastal Carolina and they rushed for 386 yards, but still lost by 23 points.

A.J. Erdely passed for 149 yards with no TD and a pick and also was the team’s 2nd leading rusher with 68 yards on the ground. Spencer Brown led the team with 94 rushing yards averaging 4.7 yards per carry and expect him to carry a heavy workload in this game.

UAB’s defense was bad in the 2nd half in the loss to Coastal Carolina and they have to shore up at home in this game or they will be under .500 taking a loss. They are not facing a dynamic offense in Tulane, but a pretty balanced one.

Georgia Tech vs Pittsburgh

The Yellow Jackets were well in position to put the Bulls away, but they ended up blowing a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter. It’s tough to win any game when a defense gives up 21 points in one quarter. That’s exactly what happened to the Yellow Jackets—a colossal meltdown that ended up costing them their first loss of the season.

Starting safety Tariq Carpenter being ejected earlier in the game for targeting didn’t help matters, either. He missed three quarters of the epic shootout and ultimately wasn’t on the field to help stave off the comeback.

An entire football game of blown assignments and mental breakdowns is enough to drive any head coach mad. Yellow Jackets coach Paul Johnson will probably spend the whole week preaching discipline and situational football in preparation for Pittsburgh.

The Panthers weren’t even safe in the confines of their own home against the No. 11-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. They ran into a buzz saw in Week 2.

There is always plenty of optimism at the beginning of the season before teams are slapped with a cold dose of reality. That reality came in the form of Panthers quarterback Kenny Pickett being held for only 55 yards passing and one interception against the Penn State defense. Running back Qadree Ollison was the only skilled position player that showed some life—rushing for 119 yards and one touchdown with an average of 5.7 yards per carry.

Pickett has to be more productive passing the football if the Panthers expect to make any noise this season. Then again, he’s playing for a football program that’s accustomed to disappointment.

East Carolina vs Virginia Tech : The American Athletic Conference will duke it out with the Atlantic Coast Conference as the East Carolina Pirates take on the Virginia Tech Hokies at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia. East Carolina has announced it won’t make the trip to Blacksburg this weekend for its scheduled game at Lane Stadium against Virginia Tech.

The East Carolina Pirates had a miserable start to their year as they lost at home to NC A&T by a score of 28-23. Well, they got back on track last week against the North Carolina Tar Heels as they won by a score of 41-19. They completely routed the Heels, despite the fact that they were 16.5 point underdogs in the game. Can they build on that win?

It will be very hard as they are huge dogs in this one and they did lose 64-17 at home to Tech last year. Reid Herring has taken over at QB and he has a solid game against the Heels as he threw for 290 yards and a TDs in the win. He also threw for 309 yards and two TDs in their opening loss, but he did have two INTs as well in that game. The problem for him here is that he is facing a much tough defense than he has faced in his first two games.

The Pirates have a 2nd QB that they use but he is mostly a runner. He had 36 yards rushing and two TDs against the Heels and the Pirates may need to use him a bit more to keep that Hokie defense off balance. The defense did a great job last week against what will be a very good North Carolina offense. If they hope to stay in this game then they will need that defense to step up again. It will not be easy as that Virginia Tech offense has been good so far and very balanced. ECU really has its work cut out for it in this one, but they do have revenge on their minds and momentum for last week so anything is possible.

The Virginia Tech Hokies went 9-4 last year and many felt that they would take a step back this year, especially after losing so much of their vaunted defense. Well, it has been a good start for them as they are 2-0 and their defense has looked strong so far. The Hokies began their season with a strong 24-3 road win over Florida State and then they trounced William & Mary last week by a score of 62-17.

This is a very tough team that Justin Fuente has on his hands and they should roll into their home game against the Irish on Oct 6th with a 5-0 mark. That is still a little ways away and we are here to talk about their matchup with the Pirates this week. This young defense will be tested in this one as the Pirates have a heck of an offense and one that will tire a defense out. The Hokies have a solid defense, but it is not a deep one.

The offense averaged 28.2 ppg last year and with seven starters back, they will be much stronger this year. Josh Jackson has had a decent start as he has thrown for 424 yards and three TDs so far. He had just 217 yards passing in the win over the Tribe last week, but he didn’t need to throw a ton as they ran for 305 yards. This is a balanced offense overall, as you can see from the number below and they will be taking on an ECU defense that may have played over its head last week. Jackson threw for 372 yards with five TDs and no INTs in the win over the Pirates last year. Good luck ECU.

The Miners haven’t done a good job defensively this season, which is one of the biggest reasons they haven’t won a game yet. UTEP gave up 30 points in their first game of the year and 52 points to UNLV in their last game. They will have a tough time getting a win this season if they can’t play better on defense.

Unfortunately, things aren’t looking up for the Miners because the Vols are a better team than their first two opponents were.

The Miners have struggled against the run this season, giving up 521 rushing yards and six touchdowns in two games. If they can’t do a better job running the ball, they will struggle against a Tennessee team that has rushed for 319 yards and six touchdowns in two games.

UTEP’s passing game has been non-existent so far, with the team throwing for 250 yards and three interceptions in two games. They have had success running the ball, rushing for 367 yards and four touchdowns in two games. If they can control the clock, they will have a better chance to win this game.

The Volunteers were able to bounce back from their embarrassing week 1 loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers with a blowout win over the Eastern Tennessee State. With their first win of the season out of the way, the Volunteers will be trying to work out the remaining kinks in their offense and defense as they prepare for SEC conference play, which starts a week after this game.

The Volunteers ran the ball well against Eastern Tennessee, and they will focus on running the ball when they face the Miners, who haven’t done a great job against the run this season.

Tennessee’s passing game was efficient against the Buccaneers, with Jarrett Guarantano and Keller Chryst completing 11 of 16 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown. The Miners defense played better against the pass last week, but they will likely struggle against the Vols on Saturday.

The Volunteers pass defense looked better against East Tennessee, after getting ripped for 429 yards and five touchdowns by the Mountaineers last week and they should be able to contain the Miners, who have struggled to pass the ball this season.

With the Florida Gators looming a week after their game against the Miners, the Volunteers have to avoid looking forward to their rivalry game if they don’t want to suffer an upset on Saturday.

After being held to only three points against Iowa, the Iowa State Cyclones are slated to receive a visit on Saturday from the No. 5-ranked Oklahoma State Sooners—a team that has put up a combined 112 points in only two games.

To make matters worse, Iowa State quarterback Kyle Kempt is day-to-day with an ankle injury, and there’s a realistic possibility he won’t be able to play on Saturday. On the other side of the ball, the Sooners are looking to plow over another unranked team to pad their 2018 playoff resume.

Noland could be the next man up
The Cyclones could have a steeper hill to climb than they initially expected if Kempt isn’t available for Saturday’s game. No one in Oklahoma has forgotten his magical 343-yard and three touchdown game to hand the Sooners their only loss a year ago.

He proved he wasn’t afraid of the moment by going on the road against one of the best teams in the country and outgunning Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield to pull off a massive upset. Any possibility of a repeat could rest on the shoulders of sophomore backup quarterback Zeb Noland.

There obviously isn’t much college film on him, aside from a few brief appearances. He came in late when Kempt went down against the Hawkeyes and finished for 43 yards and a 17.8 QBR. He’ll need a miracle turnaround to upstage the Sooners if his name is called upon.

The Cyclones were held to just three points last week in their first loss of the season to Iowa.

Don’t count on the Sooners overlooking the Cyclones this year. If anything, this was one of the few games on their schedule circled in red.

Mayfield had an outstanding game in the first match-up, throwing for 306 yards and two touchdowns. The struggles for the Sooners were more on the defensive side of the ball as it had been all season. They weren’t able to generate consistent pressure up front and Kempt proceeded to pick them apart.

The brunt of their problems came in defending the run-pass option, where Kempt would keep the ball and hit quick passes that usually went for big yards. That Sooner defense will have to be better if they hope to avoid another nightmare upset.

They were far from perfect in last week’s 49-21 win over the UCLA Bruins, who had 129 yards rushing.
